Exactly 40 years on from Foinavon's shock 100-1 victory, in the 1967 National, jockeys from four decades will be reunited to talk about their Grand National experiences at the William Hill Grand National Preview in Birmingham, in association with the Midlands Racing Club on Tuesday 10th April.
John Buckingham, the rider of Foinavon, will be joined by Brian Fletcher, who twice rode Red Rum to victory and was also successful on Red Alligator, and the Racing Post's editor Brough Scott, who himself rode in the world’s greatest steeplechase.
The three will be accompanied by over a dozen retired jockeys that have ridden in the National including Tim Norman, who rode Anglo to victory in 1966, and Bill Denson who rode in the 1947 National that was won by another 100-1 shot, Caughoo.
This historic evening will relive some of the most exciting races in the Grand National's colourful past, including Foinavon's victory and Red Rum's triumphs, with the film footage shown on a big screen for the audience. The second half of the evening will be a preview of the major races of this year's Aintree meeting, with expert opinion from John Morris, author of 'Jumping Prospects' and betting news from sponsors William Hill's PR man Ben Clarke.
The William Hill Grand National Preview, in association with the Midlands Racing Club, is being held at Stirchley United Working Men's Club, Hazelwell Lane, Stirchley, Birmingham, B30 2PP on Tuesday 10th April. Doors open at 7.15pm for a 7.45pm start and the cost (to non members) is £6. There will also be an auction in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund during the evening and Brough Scott will be accepting a cheque from all the Midlands Racing Club’s fundraising efforts on behalf of the IJF.
