2009 Grand National Entries revealed

Pete Culshaw - 3 Feb 2009
Entries were revealed today for the 2009 John Smith’s Grand National, run at Aintree on Saturday, April 4, which boasts a record prize fund of £900,000.

There are 123 entries in total for the world’s greatest chase, with both the previous two winners of the John Smith’s Grand National engaged along with two Cheltenham Gold Cup victors and a whole host of other high-class performers.

As expected, last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Denman has been entered, and he is one of 11 possible starters from the yard of champion jump trainer Paul Nicholls. If successful, Denman would become only the third horse to win both the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup and the John Smith’s Grand National following on from Golden Miller (who won both races in 1934) and L’Escargot (who won the Gold Cup in 1970 and 1971 prior landing the 1975 Grand National).

Nicholls, who has more entries than any other trainer and is seeking his first John Smith’s Grand National success, could also rely on recent impressive Sky Bet chase winner Big Fella Thanks, Cornish Sett, the 2006 totesport.com Becher Chase victor Eurotrek, last season’s John Smith’s Topham Chase victor Gwanako, Leading Attraction, My Will, Nozic, Opera Mundi, Silverburn and 2006 RSA Chase scorer Star De Mohaison.

David Pipe enjoyed the finest hour of his training career when sending out Comply Or Die to victory last season in the John Smith’s Grand National and the 10-year-old is one of seven entries from the Pond House team in 2009. Comply Or Die would be bidding to become the first horse since Red Rum in 1973/1974 to land back to back renewals of the famous race and could be joined by stable companions Madison Du Berlais, successful in this season’s Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury, Arteea, Le Toscan, Milan Deux Mille, Piraya and Puntal.

Comply Or Die’s success last season broke the recent domination of Irish-trained horses, who have landed six of the last 10 renewals of the John Smith’s Grand National. This year’s challenge from Ireland looks as strong as ever, with 35 entries. The Irish-trained contingent includes last year’s runner-up King Johns Castle, who is now back on the John Smith’s Grand National trail following a setback earlier in the season.

His trainer Arthur Moore commented: “King Johns Castle is in good form at the moment. He made a good recovery from his problem in November and we agreed that he went back into exercise. He’s been doing some good work in the past few weeks and he’s taking it well so we feel that he’s justified an entry in the John Smith’s Grand National.

“The vets gave him a good report and he’s now back in full training, so we are hopeful that he can get to Aintree in April. I would imagine that he would have a couple of runs beforehand, more likely over hurdles because it’s an easier programme for him.

“He had a great run through in the 2008 John Smith’s Grand National and I would be hoping for more luck in this year’s race. It’s a long way away at the moment but we are optimistic of getting him there.”

King Johns Castle is one of seven entries for J P McManus, the legendary Irish owner and gambler who has yet to see his famous colours carried to victory in the John Smith’s Grand National. Other strong contenders among the McManus septet are the 2007 Irish Grand National winner Butler’s Cabin, who was well in contention when falling at Becher’s on the second circuit in 2008.

Also among the entries from Ireland is last year’s Irish Grand National victor Hear The Echo, trained by Mouse Morris for Ryanair supremo Michael O’Leary’s Gigginstown House Stud. The same owner/trainer combination have also entered their 2006 Cheltenham Gold Cup victor War Of Attrition while other leading contenders from Ireland include the 2007 John Smith’s Grand National hero Silver Birch, this season’s Welsh National victor Notre Pere, Black Apalachi, who showed his liking for the course when landing the totesport.com Becher Chase at Aintree in November and Snowy Morning, who finished third behind Comply Or Die in 2008. Trainer Jimmy Mangan enjoyed a memorable victory in 2003 with Monty’s Pass and he has two entries this year - Conna Castle and Himalayan Trail.

The name McCain is synonymous with the John Smith’s Grand National following the legendary exploits of triple winner Red Rum in the 1970s and Amberleigh House in 2004 for trainer Ginger McCain. His son Donald McCain Jnr has three entries this year, headed by Cloudy Lane who finished sixth in 2008 when starting joint-favourite. The nine-year-old recently proved his well-being with a battling success in the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock Park while McCain’s other two entries are Ice Tea and Idle Talk.

Gloucestershire-based Nigel Twiston-Davies is the only current trainer to have won the John Smith’s Grand National on more than one occasion, with Earth Summit (1998) and Bindaree (2002). A strong entry of seven from his Naunton base this year includes the Paddy Power Gold Cup scorer Imperial Commander.

Other significant entries include Endless Power, who proved his ability over the Grand National fences when landing the totesuper7 Grand Sefton Chase at the Northwest Racing Masters in November, Hennessy Gold Cup runner-up Air Force One, recent Grade Two Letheby & Christopher Chase victor Joe Lively, the high-class Exotic Dancer, 2007 Scottish Grand National and bet365 Gold Cup victor Hot Weld and the luckless Simon, who has travelled well in the last two John Smith’s Grand Nationals prior to falling at Valentine’s on the second circuit.

England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff could have a runner in his namesake Flintoff, whom he owns jointly with Paul Beck while Lord Andrew and Lady Madeline Lloyd-Webber will be hoping that Darkness can make the line-up at 4.15pm on Saturday, April 4.

Julian Thick, Managing Director at Aintree, commented: “We are absolutely delighted with the quality of entries received for the 2009 John Smith’s Grand National.

“With the past two winners of the Grand National, two Cheltenham Gold Cup victors, three Hennessy Gold Cup scorers, a brace of Welsh and Irish Grand National heroes plus several horses with proven ability over the Grand National fences, we couldn’t be happier.

“Although the number of entries is slightly down on the average we have seen over the last decade, that has been more than compensated for with the large number of high-class contenders, led by Denman.

“The countdown is well under way to the unveiling of the weights on February 10 and everyone is awaiting to see how the handicap will be framed with great anticipation.”
